Isaac moves north after drenching U.S. Gulf, New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Tropical storm Isaac is expected to weaken further as it heads north on Thursday, after causing significant damage to the U.S. Gulf Coast but nothing on the scale of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005.

The former Category One hurricane was likely to become a tropical depression on Thursday, and could still bring heavy rain and floods as it moved across the center of the country over the next few days, the National Hurricane Center said.

As Isaac ebbs, probes should show an elaborate flood containment plan developed for low-lying New Orleans survived its first major test, seven years to the day after Katrina laid waste to the city and killed more than 1,800 people.

And as the focus shifts from the coast, many further north will hope that Isaac brings rain desperately needed to ease a drought in the center of the United States, where summer crops have been ravaged and many rivers and dams are critically low.

The mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu, said the $14.5 billion system built for New Orleans by the Army Corps of Engineers - an array of walls, floodgates, levees and pumps - had performed "exactly as it should".

More than 730,000 residents of Louisiana and Mississippi were still without power.

Isaac never came close to the power of Katrina, which was a Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale when it smashed into New Orleans on August 29, 2005 - a day that still reverberates in the nation's psyche.

And early indications are that property damage from Isaac will not make the top-10 list of worst U.S. hurricanes by inflation-adjusted losses.

But the storm still produced major headaches, especially the seemingly endless rain that caught many long-time residents by surprise, trapped some on rooftops, and caused significant flooding in low-lying coastal areas.

SLOW MOVING

Isaac's advance slowed to a crawl after it first grazed the southeast Louisiana coast on Tuesday. That slowdown allowed it to pick up strength and dump rain for many more hours than expected. Flooding and storm surges forced thousands from their homes in areas not far from New Orleans.

"There is no such thing as 'just' a tropical storm," Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said after Isaac was downgraded on Wednesday.

U.S. President Barack Obama, declared the impact on Louisiana and Mississippi major disasters and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts.

It estimated total rainfall from Isaac of 7 to 14 inches, enough for widespread lowland flooding. Isolated maximum amounts over much of Louisiana and parts of Mississippi, Alabama and even Arkansas were expected to be as much as 25 inches.

Storm surges at high tide were also as high as 12 feet on the coast of Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana. Thousands were evacuated from St. John the Baptist Parish, north of New Orleans, after surges in Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas.

Tropical storm strength winds were blowing off the coasts of both states, though seas have been dropping over the past 24 hours as Isaac weakens, the NHC said early on Thursday. Tornadoes remained a risk, it said.

There was a heavy security presence in New Orleans to prevent any repeat of the days-long crime wave and general chaos that followed Katrina.

Police and National Guard units, many armed with assault rifles, patrolled dark and nearly deserted streets in downtown New Orleans, usually a hotbed of tourism.

The city was still being lashed by rain and high winds on Wednesday night and about 60 percent of all homes and businesses were without power.

GHOST TOWN

"It's a ghost town," said Sgt. Joseph Jennings, a member of the Louisiana Army National Guard patrolling the streets in an armored humvee.

"Everybody saw the widespread looting during Katrina and nobody wants that to happen again."

The darkness of the Lower Ninth Ward was eerily reminiscent of Katrina, when a nearby levee failed and the largely poor and black neighborhood was inundated by deadly floodwaters.

In the nearby Seventh Ward, one of the city's poorest and most crime-ridden areas, residents could be seen in shadows on porches, standing outside their darkened homes.

Earlier, along the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, Donalyn Lott watched a pumping station sucking water out of an overflowing drainage canal and into the lake.

"We're holding up pretty good ... no flooding," Lott said.

About 3,000 residents were forced from their homes in St. John the Baptist Parish, upriver from New Orleans, by flooding caused by storm surges.

Evacuations were also needed in Plaquemines Parish, a major shrimping area southeast of New Orleans that bore the brunt of the northward-moving storm.

Dozens were plucked from the roofs of their houses by local boatmen after earlier deciding they could ride out what compared with Katrina seemed like a small storm.

"This storm has delivered more of a punch than people thought," said Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser.

More than 730,000 Louisiana and Mississippi customers of Entergy Corp and other local utilities were without power as of late Wednesday.

City officials also said Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, which closed late on Monday, would remain shut on Thursday as the lines that supply it with power were knocked out by the storm.

Benchmark crude oil prices slipped on Wednesday on expectations that damage to oil facilities, offshore and along the coast, would be limited. Major oil companies including Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon Mobil Corp, began making plans to assess or restart operations.

Global shares, euro higher after Bernanke speech

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks and the euro rose on Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke kept the door open for future monetary easing, though he did not deliver an explicit signal of any imminent action during a highly anticipated speech.

Stocks on Nasdaq briefly turned negative after Wall Street had opened higher, following similar gains in Europe, where equity markets and the euro rose as signs emerged of progress toward a deal to tackle the euro zone's debt crisis.

But stocks, gold and oil prices soon rebounded from near break-even levels as investors parsed Bernanke's address to central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Bernanke said progress in bringing down U.S. unemployment was too slow and the central bank would act as needed to strengthen the economic recovery. But investors focused on what he had to say about monetary policy.

"The market was looking for him to not throw any cold water on the prospects for QE and he didn't throw any cold water on it," said John Canally, investment strategist at LPL Financial in Boston.

"The timing is a little bit iffy, but he didn't come out of the box saying that there has been substantial and sustainable improvement in the economy. Because he didn't do that, I think it's just a matter of time," Canally said.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 97.83 points, or 0.75 percent, at 13,098.54. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 7.80 points, or 0.56 percent, at 1,407.28. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 7.89 points, or 0.26 percent, at 3,056.60.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was up almost 0.4 percent, or about half as high before Bernanke spoke, at 1,081.75. An index of world stocks was up 0.3 percent at 321.38.

The euro was up 0.9 percent at $1.2609, while the U.S. dollar index was down 0.7 percent at 81.102.

Investor hopes that more monetary easing would spur economic growth and support oil demand lifted crude oil futures.

Brent crude was up 85 cents at $113.50 a barrel, while U.S. crude added $1.12 to $95.74 a barrel.

Treasury prices rose. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 12/32 in price to yield 1.5858 percent.

Spot gold prices rose $9.90 to $1,665.40 an ounce.

Egypt president in Iran for first visit in decades

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi arrived in Tehran on Thursday in the first visit by an Egyptian leader to Iran in decades.

The Egyptian president was attending a summit of the Nonaligned Movement, and is supposed to transfer leadership of the 120-nation bloc to Tehran.

Iran's state TV in a live broadcast showed Morsi being received by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the summit conference hall in Tehran.

Tehran cut diplomatic relations in 1979 because of Egypt's peace accord with Israel. Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran has considered Israel as its arch foe.

Iran's leadership welcomed the 2011 uprising in Egypt that ultimately brought Morsi, an Islamist, to the presidency.

Representatives from more than 100 countries are attending.

Tehran has an ambitious agenda for the summit, including the launching of a peace effort including Egypt, Iran, and three other countries to help resolve the crisis in its key regional ally, Syria. But anti-regime fighters have dismissed any role for Iran in a plan they and some others say has little hope of succeeding.

Iran is also using the summit to counter U.S. claims that it has been isolated over its nuclear program. The West says Iran is trying to develop weapons while Tehran says the program is for peaceful purposes.

Taiwanese group visits contested islands

Taiwan's navy has taken a group of academics to contested islands in the South China Sea, the second such trip in five weeks, the defence ministry said Wednesday amid mounting tensions in the area.

A 14-member delegation from National Taiwan University returned to Taiwan Wednesday after visiting Taiwan-controlled Taiping, the biggest island in the Spratlys, on board a Navy frigate, the defence ministry said in a statement.

"The group... held a flag-raising ceremony with the coastguard members stationed there to inspire patriotism in the young," it said.

"Naval officers and soldiers also visited the island to reiterate sovereignty claims over the Spratlys," the statement said.

Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, China, Malaysia and the Philippines claim all or part of the Spratlys -- an area thought to contain large oil reserves.

Taiwan in June reiterated its claim to the islands, along with three other island groups in the South China Sea, amid a resurgence of rival claims in the region.

In July, Taiwanese authorities sent longer-range artillery and mortars to Taiping and said it planned to conduct a live-fire military drill there in September, in a move that angered Vietnam.

All claimants except Brunei have troops based on the archipelago of more than 100 islets, reefs and atolls, which are spread across a vast area but have a total land mass of less than five square kilometres (two square miles).

South China Sea tensions escalated last month when China announced a new city and military garrison in the disputed Paracel Islands, prompting Washington to voice concern.

Ann Romney, Chris Christie make case for Mitt at RNC

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney talks with his wife Ann as they listen to New Jersey Governor Chris??

Ann Romney, resplendent in red, vouched for Mitt Romney's heart. Chris Christie vouched for the Republican presidential candidate's spine.

The potential future first lady and the blunt-talking New Jersey governor capped the second day of the Republican National Convention with a pair of much-anticipated speeches seemingly designed to counter two of Mitt Romney's perceived weaknesses. Ann tackled his difficulty connecting to voters, especially women. Christie confronted head-on Romney's flexibility on issues the party's base regards as non-negotiable.

"I want to talk to you tonight not about politics and not about party," said Ann Romney, long her husband's best asset on the campaign trail. "Tonight I want to talk to you about love."

"Tonight, we choose respect over love," Christie said, describing how his late mother "told me there would be times in your life when you have to choose between being loved and being respected."

Ann Romney urged the delegates packed into a Tampa sports arena to "to think tonight about the love we all share for those Americans, our brothers and sisters, who are going through difficult times, whose days are never easy, nights are always long, and whose work never seems done." She paid special tribute to women, who in tough economic times always seem to be "sighing a little bit more than the men."

Mitt Romney, who leads Obama among male voters but trails among women, is "warm and loving and patient," a leader defined by "love of one's fellow man," she said. "Mitt doesn't like to talk about how he has helped others because he sees it as a privilege, not a political talking point," she said.

"This man will not fail. This man will not let us down. This man will lift up America!" said Ann, who first met Mitt Romney at a dance when they were teenagers. "You can trust Mitt. He loves America. He will take us to a better place, just as he took me home safely from that dance."

She also allowed herself a dig at Obama "I can tell you Mitt Romney was not handed success. He built it." (Republicans have built a campaign theme out of the president's contention that entrepreneurs have government to thank for the investments in infrastructure and education, having taken his message to business owners that "you didn't built that" out of context). But it was one mild shot in a speech devoted to a portrait of Mitt Romney as a warm, compassionate life partner.

But if she sang in the register of compassion, Christie roared a political battle cry, promising that the former Massachusetts governor will tell "the hard truth" about America's ills and make "tough choices" like reining in entitlement spending?notably on programs for the elderly.

"Our problems are big and the solutions will not be painless. We all must share in the sacrifice. Any leader that tells us differently is simply not telling the truth," said Christie, whose speech often focused so heavily on his record in New Jersey that at times it was possible to forget that he was neither candidate nor running mate.

"We have a nominee who will tell us the truth and who will lead with conviction. And now he has a running mate who will do the same," he said.

Christie imagined the judgment of history and the fate of his children and grandchildren and declared "I want them to live in a second American Century." ("I." Not "Mitt Romney and I." And definitely not just "Mitt Romney.")

"I won't be part of the generation that fails that test and neither will you," Christie said. "It's now time to stand up. Let's stand up. Everybody stand up. Because there's no time left to waste."

"If you're willing to stand up with me for America's future, I will stand up with you," he thundered. "If you're willing to fight with me for Mitt Romney, I will fight with you."

"If you're willing to hear the truth about the hard road ahead, and the rewards for America that truth will bear, I'm here to begin with you this new era of truth-telling," he said.

Romney drew fire during the Republican primaries for his changing stances on a range of issues, and then again after a top adviser said the candidate would "Etch-a-Sketch" primary positions designed to win over core conservatives in favor of courting middle-of-the-road voters who decide the general election.

Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: Top 5 Ways To Protect ...

To celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month, the House Ear Institute (HEI) is educating the public on noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) with the top five ways to protect their hearing.

An estimated 32.5 million people in the United States have a hearing loss. That estimate is up by 2.5 million from just a few years ago. Exposure to excessive noise causes approximately 30 percent of all hearing loss yet this type of hearing loss is preventable.

"Exposure to noise damages the microscopic hair cells found in the inner ear, which play a critical role in our ability to hear," said Dr. Jose Fayad, House Ear Clinic associate. "The damage can be from a brief but intense noise, but is most often caused by regular exposure to excessive sound over the course of several years."

How loud is too loud? Prolonged exposure to sounds above 85 decibels (dB) may cause permanent hearing loss. Normal conversation is measured at a moderate noise level of 50-70 dB. A motorcycle or lawn mower is 85-90 dB. The extreme noise of a typical rock concert is measured at 110 to120 dB and an ambulance siren or jet engine at take-off is 119-140 dB. Regular exposure even wearing headphones or earbuds can be dangerous too if the volume is too loud.

Noise-induced hearing loss is usually painless, progressive and always permanent but can also be 100 percent preventable. Here are the top five ways you to help prevent it:

1. Monitor your exposure time to sounds over 85 dB and take periodic 15-minute "quiet" breaks. Although the maximum time to safely be exposed to 85 dB is 8 hours, the maximum time to safely be exposed to 100 dB is only 15 minutes. See pie-chart for more information.

2. Avoid hazardous sound environments. If you have to raise your voice to be heard, you are in a potentially hazardous environment for your hearing. This includes loud music performances, operating power tools and driving with the windows down at high speeds.

3. Whenever you can't get away from an extreme sound environment, wear hearing protection, such as foam, silicone or pre-molded earplugs, earmuffs or custom earplugs. Look for products with noise-reduction ratings (NRR) of at least 9dB. Most products provide a NRR of 22dB or greater. To hear music and conversation clearly, look for high fidelity hearing protection. They will reduce all sound frequencies equally, and can often make listening to music more enjoyable than without any protection. Shooter's plugs combined with earmuffs should be used for hunting and target practice. All can be found over the counter at your local drugstore or sporting goods shop.

4. Move away from on-stage monitors or amplifiers.

Position yourself so you are not directly in front of the speaker while performing or listening. Musicians should avoid practicing at performance levels when possible.

5. If you suspect hearing loss or notice sudden changes in your hearing or have ear pain, see an otolaryngologist (ENT) or otologist. Also, have your hearing tested by a licensed audiologist. Common hearing tests include the pure tone threshold test, the otoacoustic emissions ("OAE") test, speech audiometry and the Hearing in Noise Test ("HINT"), which was developed by HEI scientists to assess how well you can hear speech in real world situations, where background noise is present.

For consumers who want to learn more, in May the House Ear Institute is launching a virtual hearing conservation workshop. The unique program will be available for worldwide use at http://www.hei.org.

For more information, visit House Ear Institute's Sound Partners? program at www.hei.org or its new site for teens and young adults at http://www.earbud.org, where young visitors can request a free pair of earplugs.

MANILA ? Vice President Jejomar Binay wrote the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) on Tuesday asking it to investigate reports of students of hospitality courses who are given training allowance but are being made to work full time abroad.
Binay said the victims of the unfair scheme are Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) students undergoing on-the-job training in countries like Singapore, where they are paid less than the minimum wage or not at all.
?I find this alarming considering our laws governing overseas employment and youth welfare, among others,? the Vice President said in his letter to Ched Chairperson Dr. Patricia Licuanan.
Binay, who is also the Presidential Adviser on OFW Concerns, said the training allowance does not fully compensate the students who are being given actual work instead of being given training, which normally takes three to six months.
Previous allegations have been made that foreign establishments have been using the OJT program to circumvent minimum wage laws.
On April, the United Kingdom tightened its issuance of student visas because many foreigners, including Filipinos, are allegedly using it to gain employment there.
Under the new setup, students will only be allowed to work during the school term for 10 hours a week instead of the previous 20. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)

Picnic Orzo Salad and a GE French Door Fridge Giveaway! | My ...

Picnic Orzo Salad and a GE French Door Fridge Giveaway!

In my fantasy world, I live in a beautiful house, with a huge organic garden in my backyard, where I grow my own fruits, herbs and vegetables. In this fantasy world, I wake up in the morning greeted through the large bedroom windows by beautiful, tall tomato plants and green herbs. Then after I finish drinking my morning coffee, I go outside and choose my fresh produce for the day.

However, in my reality, no plant survives for more than a week in my hands! I am a disaster with plants. I?ve even killed a cactus! If you don?t believe me, just ask my husband. I?m sure he?ll be more than happy to tell you the story :-)

I love cooking and feeding my family with as much fresh, local ingredients as reasonably possible, but lets be honest, fresh produce doesn?t keep long. I have learned some tips through the years to extend the life of my fresh produce, such as, washing fruits and vegetables just before I am ready to use them and putting my greens in plastic bags then placing them in the coldest part of the fridge, where they last more than a week. But, when I saw these cool webisodes from Freshpedition featuring the new French Door Refrigerator from GE, I started thinking about just how convenient it would be to have one of these in my kitchen.

According to GE, this fridge has the most advanced ice and water filtration system for drinking and cooking, an auto-fill dispenser that fills 90%-95% automatically and large enough for a cooking pot, a dual evaporator system for longer food life, an electronic temperature deli pan, and LED lighting for greater visibility. Check out their website for more information about this beautiful fridge.

I also want to share a salad with you today that I make often, and that we all love, in which I use local and organic vegetables. This orzo salad is a true feast for the senses. Vibrant colors, wonderful textures, and bursts of incredible flavors. What I love about this dish is that it is versatile and can be made using several varieties of fresh and seasonal vegetables. Feel free to use your favorite pasta shape and be sure you make double portions of the salad, as it tastes better the next day. Buen provecho!

Psychologist Brisbane - How To Know It Is Grief, Not Depression?

Grief and clinical tend to share a number of symptoms. This is complicated by the fact that pro-longed grief can eventually lead to depression. The main difference between grief and depression lies in the ability to experience and express other emotions. A person with grief will at times have and express the emotions of happiness or pleasure. The person might even laugh at a witty comment. However with someone suffering from depression, experiencing pleasure is beyond them. The individual is perpetually by feelings of emptiness and despair.

How to determine the stages of the grieving process

The grieving process can be more or less defined in a sequence of five stages. These stages can be use in determining whether an individual is through with grieving or not.

The stages are:

i. ? Denial

This is usually the first reaction that is expressed in most people facing the death of a loved one. In the denial stage the individuals is not willing to accept the death. Some people even come up with absurd explanations for the absence of the deceased.

ii. Bargaining

The bargaining stage arises when the bereaved finds it unbearable to face the future without the deceased. The individual might try to make a pact with God, asking for God to undo the death. At this point the reality of the reality of the death has begun to set in.

iii. Anger

In some individuals the sudden death of a loved one can cause intense feelings of anger.

This anger is primarily directed at the deceased. This anger can also be directed towards other family members, doctors, nurses and God. This emotional state can last for years.

iv. Depression

The bereaved arrives at this stage after realizing that nothing can be done to bring the deceased back. The bereaved person is unable to imagine life without the loved one which removes all the fun out of life. Self-isolation is common at this stage. This stage can persist for an infinite period of time

v. Acceptance

Eventually the bereaved realizes that life has to continue regardless of the death. At this point the individual will emerge from seclusion and make attempts to go back to a normal routine.

It is worth noting that some people might fail to go through all five stages and yet emerge stronger from the experience. Others might get stuck at one stage and fail to move to any other stage. For instance an individual might slide into chronic depression. In such instances professional help should be sort. If you happen to live in Waterford, Loganholme, Slacks Creek, Waterford West or Edens Landing look for a psychologist Brisbane. Brisbane is bound to have a large number of psychiatrists.

Tips for Arizona parents who need to name a guardian for children ...

Naming a guardian for your children may be one of the most difficult tasks of estate planning. Is there anyone in your life, besides a spouse or partner, who you think would be capable of raising your children in a manner that is similar to your own parenting style and family values? Does this individual have the capacity to love your children just as much as you do? If the individual already has children, will he or she be willing to care for more children?

These are very difficult questions to address, but as we mentioned last week on our Scottsdale probate law blog, parents should go through the legal process of naming guardians for their children so that they have some say in who is to take care of their minor children in the event that something were to suddenly happen to both parents.

In addition to naming a guardian in your will, you can also make sure that your children receive the financial resources they need at the right time by using other estate planning tools such as trusts.

You can give named guardians permission or another responsible individual permission to handle your minor children's finances if you die or are no longer capable of making financial decisions for your children. Parents may consider creating trusts that dictate how any money left to minor children should be spent.

There are several types of trusts folks can create depending on their specific needs and goals. Parents with minor children may use a testamentary trust. This trust is created when a parent dies. It holds assets parents have chosen to distribute to children after death. Trusts can specifically outline when and how money should be spent for children.

Parents should understand that providing detailed instructions for guardians and those who have been chosen to handle minor children's money is important, but parents also need to make sure there is some room for flexibility. There are many things a parent may not be able to control, but parents can make sure that they have taken the basic steps to ensure someone will be able to care for their children as best as possible if something ever were to happen to them.

Guest Blog: Top 10 Rules for Dating Pro Athletes |

By Amy

Lots of chicks out there chase athletes around?.puck bunnies, cleat chasers, jersey chasers, whatever you want to call it. It would be pretty cool to have a talented, hot, rich husband- get to be in the spotlight, a status symbol?it makes sense why women dream of marrying these types of guys. But the reality of the situation can be much different. Relationships are complicated as it is, but when you throw in a high-stress, high-stakes, high-profile job like being a professional athlete, it can make things a bit more complicated. Look at a sports calendar. It is FULL of games. There is no doubt that your relationship is going to be long distance part time, if not almost full time. If he plays in a different city, it will be 100% full time long distance. That can take its toll on anyone. Anyone who has ever been in a long distance relationship knows what I?m talking about. I have been dating an athlete for a while now, and I learned pretty fast what I need to do to keep the relationship alive on my end, and what I should expect of him on his end.

Rule One:?Be patient

I cannot stress this enough. Your guy?s schedule is going to be WAY busy. And when he has off time, he?s going to want to just chill, sleep, or hang out with his buddies. You will not always hear from him, and he will not always respond to your texts. Granted, some guys are better at responding to texts than others, and I?m just making a generalization here ? busy guys will not respond to you. It doesn?t mean he doesn?t care, it just means he?s busy, and you have to understand this. You also have to understand that if he is a minor leaguer, he has a lot more on his plate, a lot more to prove. He may not want to give up his life in his sport for you just yet, you may endure a few years of ?waiting? for him. Be patient and support him. He will REALLY appreciate that.

Rule Two:?Make sacrifices (two-way)

This rule goes both ways for both people in the relationship. If you are both committed to trying the long distance thing, or the dating-while-in-season thing, you need to both put in time. It means taking the time to call after a game. It means spending a bunch of money on a plane ticket to go visit for a weekend, or sending a care package. I am very aware that this contradicts what I said in rule one, that you have to be patient and not ?expect? his call. That is the reality of the situation. He won?t always be able to. But he should do his best to make the time.

If you?re lucky enough to have your guy play in your town, you have to be willing to sacrifice your time to go to as many games as you can, and he has to understand that you can?t make all of them, since you have a life, too.

Rule Three:?Good communication (two-way)

I have this listed as rule three, but 1 2 and 3 are all equally important. Any man that is worth your time will know for a fact that women need to know what?s going on or what?s in store. HOPEFULLY your guy will have briefed you on what he?s like when he?s in season. Maybe he has already talked about past long distance relationship failures and what went wrong. My guy told me once before his season started, ?Some girls think they can handle the long distance thing, but once reality hits, they change their minds.? That really hit home for me, since I had NO idea what I was getting into. He continued, ?you just have to be patient with me.? I wasn?t really sure what he meant by that, but he certainly was right. I learned that I am way more patient than I think. Had he not said those things, I would probably be tearing my hair out going crazy. It was a vague statement, but in hindsight it was really important. I almost decided against the distance thing, but said, ?it?s not forever, is it?? No, it?s not forever. Worth a shot.

Keep in mind that when I say ?communication,? I don?t mean specifics like ?what are you doing right now? type of communication (which is fine for idle chat). I?m talking more about the bigger picture. Where you are in the relationship, how you feel, where you think it?s going, any troubles or bumps in the road are going to happen, you have to be able to power through and solve the problems and not let them fester. Discuss things rather than arguing about them. Ask questions. Talk about possible solutions. Don?t get let emotions get in the way of problem solving.

Rule Four:?Don?t be annoying or jealous

This is a general rule that applies for anyone in any relationship. It?s hard to judge sometimes when you?re being annoying because everyone has different opinions and tolerance levels for annoying behavior. You have to keep in mind that your guy is busy doing stuff, and he doesn?t always have time to talk (rule one), so there is no need to blow up his phone or his Facebook page. You may learn pretty quickly when you are being annoying, based on his reaction to what you do. If you keep unnecessary communication to a minimum, your guy will be happy. Yes, you can send him the random ?I love you? text, but don?t overdo it. Use your best judgement.

You also have to keep in mind that your guy is in the spotlight. He may have to go places: signings, public appearances, charity appearances, sign autographs after games. He will meet people. He will meet lots of people. He will meet other girls. DO NOT (referring to rule three) get bent out of shape about this. Do not stalk his female friend additions on Facebook. If you have trust issues, DO NOT get involved in this sort of relationship. It will eat you alive. If he ends up cheating on you for whatever reason, he is a jerk and isn?t worth your time. Move on.

Rule Five:?Trust the relationship (two-way)

Another two-way rule that is VERY important. Sometimes it?s better to not know what they are doing. Let him have time ?with the guys.? Don?t give him 20 questions like where are you, who are you with, were there any girls there ? because the answers are most likely at a bar, with the guys, yes there were girls there. Unless your guy is an antisocial loner, he will go out with his teammates as often as possible. This needs to happen so don?t try to force it otherwise. You have to trust each other to stay faithful. If you do not have this, a long distance relationship is NOT for you. Or any relationship, for that matter. (To put it into perspective, there have been periods of 24 or 48 hours where I haven?t heard from my guy. Do I like it? No. Do I know he will call me or text me later? Yes. Do I text him anyway? Yes. Do I give him shit about it when he does actually call me? No.)

Rule Six:?Make decisions on your own

If you are having a rough time in life, jobs, whatever, you may not always have him there to lean on. You have to make regular life decisions on your own or with other friends (emphasis on ?regular life,? since any huge life-changing decisions should always be discussed with your guy). NEWS FLASH: most guys give zero shits about what petty small-scale decisions you make (should I get the blue dress or the black one? Should I make my pin number your birthday?), so this could probably be applied to any relationship. Guys appreciate independence. Dependency and helplessness is NOT attractive in a distance relationship.

Rule Seven:?Do not expect him to make any big decisions while in season

While your guy is in season, he probably has NO idea what?s in store for him after the season is over. It doesn?t mean he hasn?t thought about it, he just has no idea. I don?t have an excuse for them as to why, they just don?t. Don?t grill him (rule three) on what his plans are. Don?t pressure him to make decisions right now. You can certainly ask, but be prepared to accept a non-answer (rule one). If time is limited for whatever reason, use your supportive girlfriend status and motivate him to make some sort of plans for himself. Talk him through it using logical unbiased questions. Sometimes your guy needs you to give him a push. Don?t get jammed up if he initially resists. The fact that you brought it up and are encouraging him to make decisions is enough.

Rule Eight:?Get to know his sport

This is sort of self-explanatory but it can mean a lot to your guy if you follow his league or his sport in general. It can give you something to talk about and can give you a good idea about what sort of pressure he is under and what is going on in his life. If you don?t understand part of it, ask him. I still have no idea how to spot the difference between a fastball or a slider or a changeup. I understand the fundamental differences, but I don?t see it when I?m looking at it. Just looks like a ball traveling really fast. Yet I continue to ask?

Rule Nine:?Be Encouraging

Another self-explanatory rule. Your guy will have ups and downs, just like any sport season does. It is your job as Supportive Girlfriend to be there through all of it. You can?t be a fair-weather girlfriend. Your guy may shut down or get really annoyed with his team?s or his own performance. This will affect you. You can?t take it personally (rule one), you need to be there to talk to him. If he doesn?t want to talk about it, you have to accept that.? Put yourself in his shoes. Relate his experiences to some of your own experiences and how you overcame it?put it into perspective; it will help you understand it too.

Rule Ten:?It IS all about him ? to a certain degree

All of this may sound like a load of crap to some of you. Relationships ARE supposed to be 50/50, give and take, a balance of everything. In some cases, you have to shift that balance to accommodate. As a pro athlete, your guy has a more than full time job. He doesn?t have all that time to put in half the effort, make half the trips, spend half of the money. You as Supportive Girlfriend have to understand this and deal with it. Sometimes you have to bend over backwards for him, and you should be willing to do that. If you?re not able to, he should understand that. At the same time, if he doesn?t acknowledge your effort and isn?t appreciative of everything you put into the relationship, and he isn?t willing to accommodate to your life after his season is over, he is not worth your time. This is only a temporary shift of balance.

A lot of these things I said in these rules are contradictory. Saying two-way communication is important but then going back and saying you have to be ok with him not talking to you. It really doesn?t make much sense at all, I?m aware of this. There are times when its ok to accept non-communication and there are times to not. Use your best judgement.

Reflections

Every now and then you have to take a step back from the relationship and look at it objectively. Am I still happy doing this? Is this guy worth waiting around for? If he decides to play for a few more years, would I be able to do this for another season? Five more years? If he lands a big(ger) contract and has to move somewhere else, what would I do?

These types of relationships are a constant test of your mental and emotional strength. A relationship built on a good solid base of trust and communication can last, if you both do your best to keep up with it.? As for being in the spotlight on the red carpet on a player?s arm, it?s probably not going to happen. You might have a few opportunities to parade around with him for banquets or other appearances, but for the most part, you are not visible. Reality bites sometimes. Bottom line is, he is busy and you come second to his sport. You have to accept that, no questions asked. But when his season is over, it needs to be about both of you.

7 dead, 48 hurt in blast at Venezuela refinery

By NBC News staff and wire services

A gas explosion at Venezuela's Amuay refinery killed seven people and injured another 48, the local governor said Saturday, adding that the situation was under control.

"There's no risk of another explosion," she told state TV. "Right now, we're attending to the injured."

The plant in Paraguana in the country's west?is its largest refinery, producing some 645,000-barrels a day.

"There was a gas leak," Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez told state TV. "A cloud of gas exploded ... it was a significant explosion, there are appreciable damages to infrastructure and houses opposite the refinery."

Venezuela?s El Universal newspaper published a picture showing the night sky glowing orange with flames.

Both Ramirez and workers said there had been injuries, but gave no more details.

Emergency workers were at the scene, where smoke and flames could be seen over the facility. Inhabitants of the immediate area were being evacuated, authorities said.

Ivan Freites, a union leader at the state oil company PDVSA, said foam would be used to control the fire.

PDVSA has struggled with repeated refinery problems in recent years, affecting its production figures and ability to fulfil ambitious expansion plans.

Power faults, accidents and planned stoppages for maintenance have hit exports from South America's biggest crude producer and OPEC member.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Wall Street Reacts to Apple's Legal Win Over Samsung ... - AllThingsD

Apple?s already soaring stock got yet another boost in after-hours trading today, after it largely won a bruising patent infringement battle with Samsung.

Shares of the tech giant, which have risen 76 percent in the last year, are now up almost 1.8 percent, or $11.73, to $674.95. Apple?s stock closed Friday afternoon at $663.22.

This comes on the heels of Apple becoming the most valuable public company of all time this week, after surpassing a market capitalization beyond $600 billion last week.

Now it is even higher, thanks to the jury verdict and ? perhaps even more significantly for investors in the weeks ahead ? as new versions of the popular iPhone and iPad are about to be launched this fall.

Today, with those iPhones and iPads a key part of the legal battle, the trial effect hit.

After the markets closed, jurors ruled that many of the Samsung smartphones and tablets infringed on various design and utility patents held by Apple on its popular iPhone and iPad devices. It also found some Samsung phones had violated Apple?s protected ?trade dress? for the iPhone.

There will obviously be an appeal ? Samsung said as much clearly in its cheeky statement about the loss:

?It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies,? the South Korean consumer electronics giant said. ?This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple?s claims.?

But, for today at least, Wall Street likes the Apple legal victory.

Check it out for yourself:

Boise State accepts invite to join Big West for non-football sports starting July 1

?

CBSSports.com wire reports

BOISE, Idaho -- Boise State has agreed to make the Big West Conference its new home for all non-football sports.

Boise State President Bob Kustra announced Friday the school has accepted an invitation to join the conference starting July 1.

The university has been searching for a new league since the football team agreed to join the Big East next season, a move that also brought an end to the school's membership in the Mountain West Conference.

Kustra says joining the Big West complements the coast-to-coast profile created in part by the football team's entrance into the Big East.

Next season, Boise State men's and women's basketball, tennis, track, volleyball and other sports will compete in the new league.

Other Big West members include Hawaii, San Diego State and Pacific.

Aesthetics key to Mount Allison University arts centre design

August 24, 2012

MOUNT ALLISON UNIVERSITY

An atrium is one of the features of the arts centre at Mount Allison University, designed by the Zeidler Partnership Architects. It consists of a set of three, interconnected buildings that include specialized studios and classrooms and a theatre along with office and seminar spaces.

With excavation work underway, EllisDon is targeting completion for summer 2014 of Mount Allison University?s Centre for the Arts, the first new academic building to be constructed since 1979 at the university campus in Sackville, New Brunswick.

With a slim profile and clad in the university?s traditional rose-coloured sandstone, the centre has been designed to create ?a stunning new presence? at the campus?s north-west edge.

?The Centre for the Arts has been a dream at Mount Allison for nearly a decade,? said university president and vice-chancellor Robert Campbell. ?This is a hugely exciting endeavour, and one of which we are very proud.?

Designed by the Zeidler Partnership Architects, the 50,000-square-foot centre features a large atrium with double-height ceilings linking three distinct spaces: the School of Fine Arts, housing contemporary art studios with facilities for painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and other media; a studio hall with reinforced floors, heightened ceilings, and controlled lighting; and a 100-seat black box theatre with cutting-edge sound and lighting.

Clad in Mount Allison University?s traditional rose-coloured sandstone, the Centre for the Arts will house the Fine Arts facility on the left and a 100-seat theatre on the right. Designed by the Zeidler Partnership Architects the arts centre, in Sackville, New Brunswick, is tentatively scheduled to open in the fall of 2014. Construction manager is EllisDon.

The facility will also house office and seminar spaces. The atrium will serve both as an area to hold receptions and social events as well as a place for students to exhibit their work and meet to exchange ideas.

The two-storey building will be home to the fine arts and drama programs, which are currently spread throughout facilities across campus.

?For the first time, we are all going to be under one roof,? said Thaddeus Holownia, head of the Fine Arts department.

?It is going to move us forward to accommodate our curriculum in a contemporary way, with specialized classrooms, studios, and equipment.?

Construction costs are estimated at $18 million.

The building?s design was based on the recommendations of a team of university members who worked with the Zeidler Partnership to detail the department?s needs and space requirements.

In addition to being functional, the design also is a good fit aesthetically with the campus, Holownia said.

?Providing for modern facilities that will serve the university community well for years while being respectful of the past and campus look was no easy task, but we were determined to bring the two together,? said Zeidler Partnership senior partner Tarek El-Khatib, the project?s principal architect.

The project team includes associated architect Arthur J. Arseneau Ltd., structural engineers BMR Structural Engineering, mechanical engineers Crandall Engineering Ltd. and electrical engineers AEC Engineering Inc. Landscape architect is gh3 Inc.

EllisDon is acting as construction manager.

From a construction perspective, EllisDon project manager Robert Dillabough said key challenges include maintaining access to the balance of the university grounds, given the centre?s strategic location, and keeping noise levels down.

?We?re building basically at the heart of the university,? he said.

The centre is tentatively scheduled to open in the fall of 2014.
