Militants kidnap 6 Egyptian security men in Sinai

CAIRO (AP) ? Suspected militants in Egypt's Sinai abducted six security personnel as they headed to Cairo for holidays early Thursday, security officials said, the first such kidnapping of security forces in the increasingly lawless peninsula.

The officials said masked gunmen ambushed two taxis at gunpoint outside the city of el-Arish, the capital of North Sinai governorate, fleeing with five policemen and one border guard captive, none of whom were in uniform. The officials earlier said seven men had been kidnapped but revised the figure after they confirmed one of the policemen was already on holidays.

Criminals and Islamic militant groups have exploited a security vacuum that developed in the Sinai since the 2011 uprising against longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Occasionally, tribal Bedouins would briefly kidnap foreigners to use them as bargaining chips with authorities, urging them to release imprisoned relatives. Islamist militant groups have also exploited the lawlessness to settle scores with security and undermine their hold on the peninsula. Weapons have also flowed to the area from Libya, posing an additional challenge to security forces.

Egypt's state news agency said President Mohammed Morsi held an emergency meeting with the defense and interior ministers to discuss the kidnapping. Four of the policemen work in the Rafah border terminal leading to the Gaza Strip, and one was in a riot police unit deployed in the peninsula. The border guard was a member of the military.

Security officials say the Thursday kidnapping was carried out by militant groups, known to authorities, who are hiding in the rugged mountain areas in the North Sinai governorate. Two officials said the kidnapping came after the mother of an imprisoned militant said she found her son to be tortured in detention, causing his eye sight to fail. The imprisoned militant is held on charges of attacking a police station in the early days after Mubarak's ouster.

The officials said authorities were sending the family to visit their son in prison again and provide him with necessary medical attention in a bid to defuse anger over his treatment, and secure the safety of the captive security personnel. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the new instructions with the media.

The security officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters. They said forces in the Sinai were on high alert, particularly along the border with the Gaza Strip. The officials also said movement was restricted for the multinational forces stationed in Sinai since the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel was signed in 1979.

The volatile northern Sinai, where militants often target police stations and security forces, borders Hamas-ruled Gaza as well as Israel. Complicating the situation is a longtime resentment by local tribes toward the central government, which they accuse of discrimination, neglect, and police brutality.

The disorder has made it easier for extremist groups to operate in the area, which is also rife with cross-border weapons, drugs and people trafficking.

Morsi had pledged to restore security to the peninsula. Officials from the presidency at one point negotiated with locals to ease the crackdown and pursuit of fugitives. In exchange, locals were to refrain from attacks on authorities or cross-border raids on Israel.

The U.S. has repeatedly discussed the situation in Sinai with Egyptian authorities and offered security and border control advice.

In August 2012, militants attacked soldiers near the border with Gaza, killing 16 of them in what was the most brazen militant attack on Egypt's military by in modern history. The perpetrators remain unidentified.

Infants born to women who took vitamin C during pregnancy had less wheezing in first year of life than babies whose moms took a placebo

WASHINGTON, DC Pregnant women are advised not to smoke during pregnancy because it can harm the baby's lungs and lead to wheezing and asthma, among other problems. If a woman absolutely can't kick the habit, taking vitamin C during pregnancy may improve her newborn's lung function and prevent wheezing in the first year of life, according to a study to be presented Saturday, May 4, at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in Washington, DC.

"Vitamin C is a simple, safe and inexpensive treatment that may decrease the impact of smoking during pregnancy on childhood respiratory health," said lead author Cynthia T. McEvoy, MD, MCR, FAAP, associate professor of pediatrics at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Doernbecher Children's Hospital.

The study included 159 women who were less than 22 weeks pregnant and were unable to quit smoking. Participants were randomly assigned to take either one 500 milligram capsule of vitamin C or a placebo each day with a prenatal vitamin. Neither the study investigator nor the women knew what was in the capsule they were taking. A group of nonsmoking pregnant women also was studied.

Investigators tested the newborns' pulmonary function at about 48 hours of life. They measured how the newborn breathed in and out, how easily the baby's lungs moved and how big the baby's lungs were. Results showed that babies born to smoking women who took vitamin C had significantly improved lung function at birth compared to babies whose mothers took a placebo.

The researchers also contacted the parents through the infants' first year of life to document any episodes of wheezing and other respiratory symptoms. They found that infants whose mothers were in the vitamin C group had significantly less wheezing through 1 year of age than the infants whose moms had received the placebo.

Specifically, 21 percent of infants in the vitamin C group had at least one episode of wheezing compared to 40 percent of those in the placebo group and 27 percent of infants born to nonsmokers. In addition, 13 percent of infants whose mothers were randomized to vitamin C needed medication for their wheezing compared to 22 percent of infants in the placebo group and 10 percent in the nonsmoking group.

"Getting women to quit smoking during pregnancy has to be priority one, but this finding provides a way to potentially help the infants born of the roughly 50 percent of pregnant smokers who won't or just can't quit smoking no matter what is tried," said study co-author Eliot Spindel, MD, PhD, senior scientist at the Oregon National Primate Research Center at OHSU.

In addition, the researchers also found that one genetic variant shown to increase the risk of smokers developing cancer and associated with reduced ability to quit smoking and high likelihood of relapse seemed to intensify the harmful effects of maternal smoking on how the baby's lungs formed, Dr. McEvoy said.

"Though the lung function of all babies born to smokers in our study was improved by supplemental vitamin C," she said, "our preliminary data suggest that vitamin C appeared to help those babies at the greatest risk of harm during their development from their mother's smoking in pregnancy."

Fire shuts down Labor Dept. building

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An overnight fire at the Labor Department's headquarters shut the building down for most employees early Friday, but the agency's monthly employment report was released as scheduled.

Department employees and members of the news media involved in the release of the report were allowed in the building as usual.

But all other Labor employees who were scheduled to work in the Frances Perkins building received administrative leave.

District of Columbia fire department spokesman Lon Walls said the fire was reported around 4:35 a.m., but the sprinkler system extinguished it before firefighters arrived. He said the cause is under investigation.

Fillichio did not immediately have information on how extensive the damage was. The building on Constitution Avenue opened in 1975.

The April jobs report showed unemployment hitting a four-year low, with employers adding 165,000 jobs in April and upwardly revised figures for the previous two months.

Twitter extends API v1 availability to June 11

TweetDeck

Additional API blackout tests to continue up to final shutdown

Version 1 of Twitter's API, which many legacy clients use to pull and display information from Twitter, will have its retirement extended by over a month due to additional testing. Twitter had originally laid out a date of May 7th in conjunction with the shutting down of TweetDeck apps for Android and the desktop, which put the API discussion at the top of many user's minds. When the v1 API is finally retired, older clients that have stuck with it will cease to work and need to either move to v1.1 or shut down. Luckily, most of your popular clients in the Play Store have made the move to be compliant.

The waters will be rough over the next month still, however, as Twitter will be conducting additional "blackout" tests on the v1 API to make sure everything is ready to go with v1.1. Additionally, developers and users alike with clients using v1 may experience additional problems such as errors loading or searching Tweets in the client.

Warriors never relent in series win over Denver

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? The Golden State Warriors never relented. They didn't back down when Andrew Bogut sat out rehabilitating his left ankle. They didn't buckle when they lost Game 1 at Denver. And they didn't quit when All-Star forward David Lee tore his right hip flexor in that playoff opener ? and neither did Lee, for the matter.

For only the second time in 22 years, the Bay Area's only NBA team is heading to the second round.

Stephen Curry had 22 points and eight assists, Bogut broke out with the best performance of his injury-saddled season and the Warriors eliminated the Nuggets with a 92-88 victory in Game 6 on Thursday night.

"Just a huge win in front of our fans. I've only been here a year, but I know the nightmares they've been through in the last 20 years," Bogut said. "They're enjoying this as much as we are."

Bogut had season-bests and career-playoff highs of 14 points and 21 rebounds, and rookie Draymond Green added a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds to power Golden State into the second round for the first time in six years.

Bogut added four blocks and three assists in an unforgettable performance after rehabilitating his left ankle most of the season. He also became the first Warriors player with 20 rebounds in the playoffs since Larry Smith had 23 on May 12, 1987 at the Lakers.

"It's very satisfying. It's an emotional game for me," Bogut said.

The Warriors went ahead by 18 points early in the fourth quarter before holding off one final Nuggets flurry.

Andre Iguodala scored 24 points and Ty Lawson had 17 in another disappointed early exit for Denver, which has lost in the first round nine of the past 10 seasons. The Nuggets won 23 of their final 26 regular season games to earn the Western Conference's third seed, then lost four of six to the hot-shooting Warriors.

"We didn't lose this series tonight. This is a proud loss," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "We lost this series in Game 1 and 2. We didn't play well enough to sustain the confidence. We won Game 1 on a last-second layup. In Game 2, we gave away everything we worked for with 57 wins in the season. And that's on me."

The Warriors only outshot the Nuggets 40.3 percent to 34.7 percent in the finale but dominated the rebounding matchup again, 55-44. They also overcame 21 turnovers ? including 10 in the fourth ? while the Nuggets only had seven.

Golden State, seeded sixth, will open the second round at second-seeded San Antonio on Monday. The Spurs swept the Lakers in four games.

"I'm exhausted," Warriors owner Joe Lacob said after emerging from the locker room celebration.

Jackson ratcheted up the rhetoric after the Nuggets won a physical Game 5, saying Denver sent "hit men" out to take "cheap shots" at Curry. The accusations earned Jackson a $25,000 fine from the NBA for an "attempt to influence the officiating," though neither side ever got out of control in the finale.

Except Curry's shooting ? again

On the ball or off the dribble, Curry connected all over his home court in another dazzling second half. Curry swished all four of his 3-pointers in the third quarter and brought the frenzies fans roaring to their feet each time.

Green also made a corner 3 in front of Denver's bench, and Klay Thompson hustled for a rebound and a quick put-back to put the Warriors up 80-62 with 9:11 to play.

The Nuggets failed to score for nearly six minutes during the stretch. But they rallied with 13 straight, held the Warriors scoreless for almost five minutes and gave the fans in Oakland reason to worry.

After the Warriors went back ahead by nine, they nearly collapsed again. Wilson Chandler stole the rebound from Green for an easy layup to get within four, Iguodala hit another from long range and Kenneth Faried made 1 of 2 free throws to bring Denver within two with 32.4 seconds to play.

Iguodala stole Thompson's pass on the ensuing play. Chandler's running layup rimmed out, he missed a put-back and then knocked the ball out in a scrum ? a call that stood after a video review and had the Nuggets questioning whether the ball ever bounced out.

"They made the call. The refs make mistakes," Nuggets guard Andre Miller said.

The Nuggets were forced to intentionally foul Jarrett Jack, who made both free throws to give Golden State a 92-88 lead with 7.3 seconds remaining to seal the victory. Miller missed a 3 and Faried clanked a meaningless jumper as the buzzer sounded, touching off the emotional celebration.

The Warriors advanced to the second round for the first time since 2007, when the "We Believe" team upset top-seeded Dallas in similar fashion ? at home and in Game 6. Golden State lost to Utah in the second round that season.

"To finally get it done, it's kind of a hazy feeling," Curry said. "Just a sense of relief the way the game finished."

Golden State seemed to have an answer for everything Denver threw its way in this series.

Even Lee made a surprising return ? "part of it was for inspiration," Jackson said ? for the Warriors after not dressing the previous four games with what the team had called a season-ending hip injury. He grabbed one rebound and missed one jumper in 87 seconds off the bench in the first quarter.

Bogut's big first half ? 10 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and two assists ? allowed the Warriors to erase a nine-point deficit, and they sliced Denver's lead to 42-40 at the half behind a late surge of shooting from their guards on the perimeter.

Faried, the target of Jackson's accusations of "dirty play" in Game 5, picked up his fourth foul with 10:23 to play in the third quarter. Three of those fouls came in the first 1:37 of the third before Nuggets coach George Karl took him out.

Soon after, Curry took control to send the Nuggets home for good.

NOTES: Aaron Hern, an 11-year-old from nearby Martinez, who was injured in the bombings during the Boston Marathon, attended the game with his family and was honored on the videoboard during the first quarter. ... The Warriors are 10-1 in home playoff games in which they had a chance to win the series since moving to the Bay Area prior to the 1962-63 season.

Jump into Spring with Healthy Living | Creative Soul in Motion

Spring is the time of new beginnings as everything starts to pop. The grass is green, flowers are in bloom, and leaves are opening up on the trees. The sun is shining and the world seems full of possibilities.

With all the change in the air, now is a great time to take charge of your life?s choices and make a commitment to be healthy. You don?t have to empty your entire pantry and join a new gym though. Instead?

Here are 5 simple steps that you can follow to adopt a healthy lifestyle:

Get Moving

Everyone knows how important it is to stay active. Thirty minutes of moderate activity, at least five days a week can make all of the difference in maintaining a healthy weight, a strong cardiovascular system, and strength. Those who keep moving and grooving every day will be flexible and mobile as the years roll by. For many, a morning workout is helpful. Pop a DVD in, get on the treadmill, take a jog, or walk around the block. Finding a partner in fitness can provide extra motivation. If mornings don?t work, try after work for a stress reliever.

Enjoy being active and your body (and your mind and spirit) will thank you!

Eat Well

Give your body the right fuel! Protein from a variety of sources, including yogurt, tree nuts, and beans, builds muscle. Cut back on sugars, fats, and processed foods and swap them for fresh produce like strawberries and peppers. Instead of soda drink eight to ten glasses of water every day to keep your body well hydrated.

Focusing on fueling your body, rather than your emotions, can help you stay focused on a healthy diet.

Reduce Stress

Stress takes a major toll on the body, but thankfully there are many simple and easy ways to relieve anxiety. Try meditation and yoga. Deep breathing techniques.?Listen to soothing music. Find time for enjoyable hobbies.?Go for a massage once a month or do self-massage at home; in fact, here are some tips to help with self-massage:

Self-Massage Tools

Frozen Water Bottle: Most athletes are familiar with the concept of rest, ice, compression and elevation. A frozen water bottle is an affordable way to ice the feet and massage them at the same time. The ice will reduce the swelling and soothe your extremities as you roll your feet over the water bottles.

Tennis Ball: If you don?t need the ice, try a tennis ball to massage sore muscles. Tennis balls can be used on feet, legs and your back. This method is effective for working out the knots in the foot. You can roll the feet over the tennis ball from toe to heel for the most effective results. Also try rolling the tennis ball along your back as you press it into a wall.

Soup Cans: Soup cans are also used to massage the feet and legs. Consider rolling your feet over cans or rolling the cans over your legs to relieve tension and pain.

Be Gentle with Your Body

If you?re an athlete, you know the toll that a big workout can take on the body, especially if you are stepping up your workout schedule as the warm weather approaches. The pain can be immense especially if there is a lack of muscle memory and muscles are tight. Golfers especially ? you?re stepping out on the course for the first time in many months and you?ll probably be sore after the first round because you?re muscles are not used to that motion.

To help avoid this incorporate stretching and some gentle movements to help your body warm-up. Also take it easy the first week or two back on the course ? you don?t want to over do it on the first day. Also, a sports massage can help loosen up tight muscles; consider these tips and methods of sports massage inspired by experts of NY golf club, Atunyote?.

A healthy lifestyle is easy to adopt with a few simple changes. Take baby steps. Remember that moderation is key in all things and it?s okay to indulge from time to time, but treat the body as the precious temple that it is.

Google now has a 'Chief Game Designer' in Noah Falstein

Haven't heard of Noah Falstein? That may be the case, but you've probably heard of some of his work -- everything from arcade gem Sinistar to adventure game classic Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Well now he's working on another thing you've heard of: Google. According to Mr. Falstein's LinkedIn profile, spotted by TechCrunch, he recently became "Chief Game Designer" at the "Don't be evil" company -- but what could that mean?

Nothing yet, as additional information isn't available, though we've reached out to both Falstein and Google. Our friends at TC are suggesting something more "serious games" focused, or perhaps something involving Niantic Labs' Ingress MMO, but it's all up in the air at this point. A cached version of Falstein's LinkedIn reveals his new gig as chief game designer "at Android Play Studio," which ... well, that's the first time we've heard that name as well. For now, know that Google's got a game industry vet leading up something involving games at the company.

Update: Google confirmed to Engadget that Falstein joined the company, but won't say what he's up to just yet. We'll let you know more as soon as we do!

Sky customers with On Demand or Sky Go access can snag an early look at the very first episode of Hannibal, along with Trollied, Mad Dogs and The Borgias. That first hit is due for a May 7th premiere on Sky Living at 10PM in the UK, but in what's being billed as a television experiment of sorts, the show's available now through On Demand with select Sky+ set-top boxes, or the Sky Go streaming service, if you're able to access that. We can imagine plenty of other ways to get your fix without waiting for next Tuesday to roll around, but we'll let you use your own imagination to tackle that one.

May 1, 2013 ? Research in the wake of Colony Collapse Disorder, a mysterious malady afflicting (primarily commercial) honey bees, suggests that pests, pathogens and pesticides all play a role. New research indicates that the honey bee diet influences the bees' ability to withstand at least some of these assaults. Some components of the nectar and pollen grains bees collect to manufacture food to support the hive increase the expression of detoxification genes that help keep honey bees healthy.

The findings appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

University of Illinois professor of entomology May Berenbaum, who led the study, said that many organisms use a group of enzymes called cytochrome P450 monooxygenases to break down foreign substances such as pesticides and compounds naturally found in plants, known as phytochemicals. However, honey bees have relatively few genes dedicated to this detoxification process compared to other insect species, she said.

"Bees feed on hundreds of different types of nectar and pollen, and are potentially exposed to thousands of different types of phytochemicals, yet they only have one-third to one-half the inventory of enzymes that break down these toxins compared to other species," Berenbaum said.

Determining which of the 46 P450 genes in the honey bee genome are used to metabolize constituents of their natural diet and which are used to metabolize synthetic pesticides became a "tantalizing scientific question" to her research team, Berenbaum said.

"Every frame of honey (in the honey bee hive) is phytochemically different from the next frame of honey because different nectars went in to make the honey. If you don't know what your next meal is going to be, how does your detoxification system know which enzymes to upregulate?" Berenbaum said.

Research had previously shown that eating honey turns on detoxification genes that metabolize the chemicals in honey, but the researchers wanted to identify the specific components responsible for this activity. To do this, they fed bees a mixture of sucrose and powdered sugar, called bee candy, and added different chemical components in extracts of honey. They identified p-coumaric acid as the strongest inducer of the detoxification genes.

"We found that the perfect signal, p-coumaric acid, is in everything that bees eat -- it's the monomer that goes into the macromolecule called sporopollenin, which makes up the outer wall of pollen grains. It's a great signal that tells their systems that food is coming in, and with that food, so are potential toxins," Berenbaum said.

Her team showed that p-coumaric acid turns on not only P450 genes, but representatives of every other type of detoxification gene in the genome. This signal can also turn on honey bee immunity genes that code for antimicrobial proteins.

According to Berenbaum, three other honey constituents were effective inducers of these detoxification enzymes. These components probably originate in the tree resins that bees use to make propolis, the "bee glue" which lines all of the cells and seals cracks within a hive.

"Propolis turns on immunity genes -- it's not just an antimicrobial caulk or glue. It may be medicinal, and in fact, people use it medicinally, too," Berenbaum said.

Many commercial beekeepers use honey substitutes such as high-fructose corn syrup or sugar water to feed their colonies. Berenbaum believes the new research shows that honey is "a rich source of biologically active materials that truly matter to a bee."

She hopes that future testing and development will yield honey substitutes that contain p-coumaric acid so beekeepers can enhance their bees' ability to withstand pathogens and pesticides.

Although she doesn't recommend that beekeepers "rush out and dump p-coumaric acid into their high fructose corn syrup," she hopes that her team's research can be used as the basis of future work aimed at improving bee health.

"If I were a beekeeper, I would at least try to give them some honey year-round," Berenbaum said, "because if you look at the evolutionary history of Apis mellifera, this species did not evolve with high fructose corn syrup. It is clear that honey bees are highly adapted to consuming honey as part of their diet."

Laboratory flies turn to cannibalism

Researcher Roshan Vijendravarma explains how this video showing fruit fly larvae eating a larger one could reveal some of the biology of cannibalism

Researchers studying the innocuous-seeming fruit fly have found that the insects have cannibalistic tendencies.

In "crowded laboratory conditions", the larvae will often pursue, attack and eat one another, footage reveals.

Scientists investigating the effects of malnourishment on the flies found that they were able to rear keener, more capable cannibals.

The findings are reported in the journal Nature Communications.

The team, from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, says that because the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is so well-studied, the observations pave the way to discovering the biological secrets of cannibalism.

This might sound like a macabre endeavour, but cannibalism is an important part of nature.

Cannibalism in nature

Black lace-weaver spider mothers make the ultimate sacrifice for their spiderlings: See a mother spider allow her babies to devour her alive

Sexual cannibalism occurs in a number of arthropods, such as spiders. One sex, usually the female, kills and eats its partner during or after mating

Sometimes animal offspring eat each other to survive. Scientists found that tadpoles that cannibalised eggs of their own species grew up more successfully without the extra competition

Cannibalism in locusts may be the driving force behind the insects' mass migration. Researchers suggest they may combine into swarms because they are frightened of being eaten by each other

It can be a crucial source of nutrition - some crickets and locusts that migrate in vast swarms rely on eating each other to survive the journey.

And it occurs in many larger carnivores; many big cats for example will kill and eat the offspring of their rivals - eliminating the competition by eating it.

"For a long time, cannibalism has been known as a factor that contributes to evolutionary processes," says lead researcher Dr Roshan Vijendravarma.

"But it's risky: Pathogens [disease-causing organisms] are more likely to be transmitted from eating one of your own species or a closely related species."

What made this observation even more interesting for the scientists is that fruit flies are vegetarian.

"Presumably they're poorly equipped to hunt other animals, including their own species, so it's an evolutionary question as to why cannibalism still exists among non-carnivorous animals," he said.

Dr Vijendravarma's primary research was focused on the effects of malnourishment on the flies.

And although all fruit flies he studied would cannibalise one another to some degree, the flies he and his team reared - even generations after their relatives were food deprived - had a "greater propensity to cannibalise".

The gruesome larval attacks also appeared to be chemically co-ordinated; once a larva had injured its victim, others were attracted by the injury and joined the feeding frenzy.

The larvae used their mouth hooks - hooks with serrations, or teeth, on their surface.

They are simple vegetarian insects that eat yeast and can be reared on porridge?

End Quote Prof Matthew Cobb University of Manchester

"The cannibal uses the mouth hooks to rasp across the victims' flesh and then rips it open," explained Dr Vijendravarma.

And a diet of fellow fruit fly actually made the larvae develop more effective flesh-eating mouthparts; larvae raised on a cannibalistic diet developed more of these tiny teeth of their mouth hooks.

Prof Matthew Cobb, a biologist from the University of Manchester, also studies fruit flies.

He explained that the flies had been a valuable tool, used for over a century - first to understand the basic laws of genetics, and more recently to reveal how animals develop from a single cell into a complex, functioning organism.

"They are simple vegetarian insects that eat yeast and can be reared on porridge," he said.

"This study shows that we still have to learn about them.

"Although the authors don't think this occurs very often in the wild, you only have to search on the internet for 'cow eating rabbit' to come up with a well-known image of a malnourished cow eating a dead rabbit in order to get vital nutrients.

"Even the hardiest of vegetarians may have to turn to meat-eating in harsh conditions, giving us an insight into how different feeding habits may have evolved in the past."

Chrome's Native-Like Packaged Apps Now Discoverable In The Chrome Web Store For Windows And Chrome OS Dev Channel Users

windows-image-blogpostA few months ago, Google announced the Windows Start button-like app launcher for Chrome on Windows, and with it, a way to easily launch Chrome packaged apps, a new way to write apps that are based on Chrome and web technologies but behave like native apps. These packaged apps for Chrome are based on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, but they behave like native apps and have access to Chrome APIs and services that aren’t available to regular sites. Until now, developers could upload packaged apps to the Chrome Web Store and test them, but the apps weren’t discoverable in the store. Starting today, users on the Chrome Dev channel will be able to easily find and install these apps. This is likely just a prelude to a wider release of packaged apps. In today’s announcement, Google also notes that, for developers, “now is a great time to get some early feedback and polish your app before Chrome packaged apps become more broadly available.” At its I/O 2013 developer conference later this month, Google will feature at least three different sessions about packaged apps, including one about upgrading web apps to packaged apps. As Google notes, most of the packaged apps in the Web Store are “works in progress.” This, the company says, is the reason for only making them available in the Chrome dev channel right now.

Dana White, UFC gave money to Boston bombing victims

UFC president Dana White is proud of his Boston roots. He openly cheers for the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins on Twitter, and he was downright giddy when he announced the UFC would return to Boston on Aug. 17. The Boston Marathon bombing affected him, and he and the UFC responded to the tragedy.

White called the act cowardly:

?How cowardly and disgusting that these people, who lived in the city as long as they did, did that. To put the bag right next to kids, I don?t even like talking about it. It?s just disgusting.

He told the Boston Globe that he and the Fertitta brothers donated personally to the One Fund, which will help the people most affected by the bombings. The UFC and Fox also gave money.

The UFC also did something on a smaller scale that still gave some smiles to Boston UFC fans. The days after UFC 159, they conducted their #Hunt4UFC in Boston. Usually, the UFC only does their Twitter-based scavenger hunt in fight cities. White tweeted locations where Bostonians could find UFC gear. On Monday, Red Sox player and friend of the UFC Shane Victorino participated.

White and the UFC's actions won't erase what happened to Boston, but it can help some of its citizens on the way to recovery.
