Representatives for the Obama and Romney presidential campaigns debated environmental issues today at the University of Richmond.
Kenneth Berlin, speaking on behalf of Democratic President Barack Obama?s campaign, said the administration seeks a transition to a ?clean-energy economy? by providing federal financial support for low-pollution projects.
?We want to give that support, and Gov. Romney doesn?t,? Berlin said.
Jeffrey Holmstead, representing GOP challenger Mitt Romney's campaign, said Obama?s administration has limited the production of coal and oil on federal lands and made it hard to build coal-burning power plants.
?If you protect the economy in the wrong way, you can have a tremendous impact on jobs? and the economy, Holmstead said.
The one-hour debate, which included questions from the audience, was held in the Richmond School of Law building. About 100 attended.
Berlin is a retired partner at the New York-based law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He led the firm's environmental and climate change practice group. He is now an executive with a nonprofit that advocates for low-cost financing for clean-energy projects.
Holmstead is a Washington air-quality attorney for the Houston-based Bracewell & Giuliani law firm. He was an assistant administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under previous President George W. Bush.
The debate was sponsored by UR's Merhige Center for Environmental Studies and the Richmond Environmental Law Society, a student group.
